      DESCRIPTION
      The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a porous scaffold with a very high thermal and chemical stability and high resistance to different pH, ion strength and polarity of the culture media. The prepared zeolite membrane can also be utilised as a scaffold for delivering one or more biologically active chemical molecules to adhered cells. This material has a unique microbial resistance and it is indestructible in the culture medium.

      APPLICATION
      The interaction of cells with the surface of biomaterials is of great relevance both in research and clinical practice. The invention can be of interest to pharmaceutical companies, manufacturing industries of surgical prosthesis, manufacturing industries of instruments for environment defence and preservation and manufacturers of fresco and restoration products. The invention can also be applied for biomedical implants, tissue engineering, arthoplastic surgery, regenerative medicine, hold aquatic polluting and bacteria and improve architectural paintings.

      ADVANTAGES
      -The invention subject requires inexpensive reactants and zeolite membranes prepared.
      -Very easily carried-out and fast method able to produce different tailored scaffolds.
      -These supports are durable, indestructible, inseparable and resistant to thermal and chemical gradients.
      -This homogenous film is very low since it is permanent, durable and reusable in several subsequent cycles of cultures.

      -The reaction with appropriate reagents, allows one to vary and increase the strength and type of interaction with biological molecules, improving the selectivity of adhesion, growth differentiation and separation.
      -The zeolite membranes can be used in various media: buffer, sea, water, and in different conditions of pH and oxygenation
      -The zeolite membrane is very easy to transform into a solid support having excellent antimicrobic and/or antifungal properties using an ion-exchange process in the presence of cupric or silver salt solutions.

      INNOVATIONS FEATURES
      It permits the selective incorporation of undesirable substances (such as pollutant, toxic and poisonous ions and molecules) and can be used to subtract the catabolites and/or substances obtained by equilibrium reactions so as increase the cellular metabolism. Moreover, it allows the selective permeation of molecules with small kinetic diameters such as ammonia, creatinin and urea obtained from the cell catabolism.

      Prototypes of different type of auto-supported zeolite membranes have been prepared and tested in various cell cultures.

        DESCRIPTION
        The current invention provides a new approach for Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) and Vibrational Optical Activity (VOA), Raman Optical Activity (ROA) spectroscopy that simplify the apparatus design, reduces the artefacts and enables simultaneous detection of the left and right circular component of the light out coming from the sample. The above-mentioned grating generates only the fields diffracted to the first order, whose amplitudes are proportional to the right and left circular components of the light beam impinging onto the grating. The method of the present invention demonstrates that, by using these characteristics of the grating, the chiroptical properties of a medium can be easily determined by sending the light beam coming from the sample to be analysed, onto the grating, and measuring the intensity of the beams diffracted by the grating.

        APPLICATION
        -The method is based on the use of a single element, other optical elements (polarizer, mirrors, wave plates, etc.) are not required, implying a reduction of the light losses and artefacts;
        -The method enables simultaneous measurements of the left and right circular components of the light at the exit of the sample.
        -The dispersion properties of the grating allow measurements in real time to be taken, in fact the signal at every wavelength diffracted at different angles can be detected in parallel by a photodiodes array or a CCD;
        -Monochromator and phase sensitive detector are not necessary;
        -Moving or time-modulated elements are not present;
        -Decrease of the production costs because it does not require optical and/or electro-optical elements as the standard systems do;
        -Performances enhancement, real time measurements due to the absence of moving elements, extremely simplified calibration procedures of the system;
        -Real time measurement implies the possibility to investigate dynamic processes;
        -The device can be integrated into multifunctional apparatus and is able for “in situ” measurements.

        ADVANTAGES
        It is a powerful spectroscopic method to probe of the structure and behaviour of biomolecules in aqueous solutions, including peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and viruses.

          DESCRIPTION
          The present invention relates to a method and a device to measure the circular dichroism exploiting a diffraction grating with proper polarization properties.
          The grating generates first orders diffraction beams whose amplitudes are proportional to the left and right circular components of the incident light beam. We demonstrate that, exploiting this feature of the grating, the circular dichroism of any system can be easily evaluated measuring only the intensities of the first order diffracted beams, just locating the grating after the investigated system.

          APPLICATION
          Pharmaceutical, biological , cosmetic , food and environmental sector.

          ADVANTAGES
          -The method is based on the use of a single element, no other optical elements (prisms, mirrors, waveplates etc.) are required, implying low losses and reducing artefacts;
          -No monochromator and phase sensitive detectors are required;
          -No moving or modulated elements are present;
          -No detection of the light beam intensity before the sample is needed since, exploiting the particular diffraction properties of the grating, the analysis is performed on the transmitted (diffracted) light beams;
          -White linear polarized or rotating linear polarized or depolarized light can be used,
          -The dispersive properties of the grating allow to perform real time measurements, since the signal at any wavelength is diffracted at different angles from the grating and can be revealed in parallel by a photodiode array or a CCD;
          -The previous described properties allows to investigate dynamical processes;
          -Complex and repetitive calibration procedure are not required;
          -Small size , the device can be used for “in situ” measurements and integrated into in-line instruments;
          -Compact device allow to made a portable version of the instrument;

            The present technology is related to diagnosis method for detection of single or more causative agents of ocular and nervous system infections among many probable pathogens. The invention provides a rapid assay for the simultaneous detection of the pathogens responsible for infections of the eye and central nervous system for which immunological parameters are not indicative of an active infection but only indicative of exposure to the pathogen and for which classical microbiological assays such as bacterial and fungal cultures are neither sensitive enough to detect the pathogen nor rapid enough to identify the pathogen within 48 hours. In addition aqueous humor or vitreous fluid in case of endophthalmitis will be sufficient in order to detect and discriminate the infectious agent. This obviates the necessity of surgical procedure such as vitrectomy to be performed in an operating room.

            This technology combines the high sensitivity of PCR assay and the high specificity of identification by hybridization on to a macro-array with the detection of hybridization by color detection methods, the end result of which can be monitored by naked eye.

            The invention features a multiplex assay for the simultaneous detection and discrimination of pathogens that cause infections of the eye and CNS comprising:

            1) Processing the clinical samples such as corneal scraping or conjunctival swab or aqueous humor or vitreous fluid or vitrectomy lavage collected or cerebrospinal fluid aspirate or pus collected from brain abscess material or an epiretinal membrane from a patient suspected of being afflicted with eye or a CNS infection, to isolate DNA by standard methods.
            2) Amplifying a specific region of DNA from a gene that is specific to each of the pathogens by a single tube PCR technique using labeled amplification primers for each of the pathogens known to cause CNS and eye infections
            3) Detection and discrimination of pathogens using a DNA hybridization wherein the immobilized target sequences specific for each of the pathogens are reacted with amplified DNA probes generated from the PCR reaction and monitoring the hybridization by color development using specific set of reagents.
